A study of the "Crea" indicates that the putative parents are Ciliegiolo and Negrodolce
The southern origin of Sangiovese, following the spread of viticulture from Greece to Western Europe, has been demonstrated by researchers at the Crea. Only later Sangiovese, selected and cultivated in southern Italy, is certainly landed in Tuscany, also in the area of Montalcino, becoming one of the most popular and important globally Italian varietals. All this has been possible by analyzing kinship relations 'father-son' through the use of different approaches as ampelography, historical research, and molecular characterization.

The work presented by Marica Gasparro, researcher of Crea Viticulture and Enology of Turi (Bari, Italy), it was aimed to find out the pedigree of Sangiovese. Analyzing the grapevine germplasm collection, two putative parents of Sangiovese have been identified: Ciliegiolo and Negrodolce, ancient varieties recovered in the southern Puglia, believed lost in the last century. In addition, the researchers found that three varieties of wines retrieved in Calabria and Sicily (Gaglioppo of Ciro, Mantonicone and Nerello Mascalese) are derived from the intersection with the Sangiovese.

With this study, "The origins of Sangiovese: from southern Italy in Montalcino and beyond ...", Marica Gasparro is the scientific excellence diploma is awarded, which is reserved for the second place of the Brunello di Montalcino Case Basse Soldera International Prize for young researchers under 35 Edition 2015 .
